A protective cell for discharge of high level sources of ionizing radiation is ready for operation at SSE «Association «Radon»
A task group of experts of the SSE «Association «Radon» and interregional special combines conducted trainings and tests of the modular mobile protective camera (MMPC) for discharge of high level sources of ionizing radiation. According to the results of the tests, it is concluded that the installation is ready for operation.
The installation was manufactured and delivered under the Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) program with the financial support of the European Commission and under the auspices of the Joint Support Office (JSO). The modular mobile protective cell is designed to safely perform discharge work for units with gamma radiation sources in industrial lead package, with the subsequent transfer of the extracted spent sources of ionizing radiation to the Central Storage of spent sources of ionizing radiation, located at Production Complex «Vector».
A. i. Head of SAUEZM Volodymyr Feshchenko highlighted that the European Commission's support for this project is another confirmation of effective cooperation in pursuit of a common goal - ensuring a stable, cost-effective and environmentally safe functioning of the radioactive waste management system.
Currently, repositories of the SSE «Association «Radon» store over 10,000 units that were previously used in industry.
«Until the end of this year, the MMPC will work on the Dnipropetrovsk site of the SSE «Association «Radon» and ensure the discharge of all existing units in this region, and in 2020, thanks to its mobility, it will continue to work at other inter-regional branches of the enterprise», - noted Igor Buksanchuk, Director General of the SSE «Association «Radon».
