At the meeting of the Joint Committee «Ukraine – EBRD» they noted the progress in the implementation of international projects at the Chornobyl industrial site

During online conference at the meeting of the Joint Committee «Ukraine - European Bank for Reconstruction and Development», held at the Government House with the participation of Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina, Vice President for Policy and Partnership of the EBRD Pierre Heilbronn, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine Roman Abramovsky, Head of State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Sergii Kalashnyk, and authorized representatives of executive bodies, noted progress in implementing international projects .

The parties noted that owing to the stable institutional environment created by the Ukrainian side and close cooperation with the EBRD, significant progress has been made in the implementation of international projects at the Chornobyl industrial site.

Currently, work at the Chornobyl NPP is focused on the commissioning of a new safe confinement, the beginning of «hot» tests on SNF-2 for further transportation of spent nuclear fuel from the existing nuclear fuel storage SNF-1 to SNF-2.

The start of commissioning of facilities built at the expense of the international community will be the end of only the preparatory stage of the works, as the work on decommissioning of the Chornobyl NPP and transforming the Shelter object into an environmentally safe system is designed for many years.

The participants of the meeting of the Joint Committee «Ukraine – EBRD» agreed on further fruitful cooperation in the development of infrastructure for management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel generated during the decommissioning of the Chornobyl NPP and transformation of the Shelter object into an environmentally friendly system.
