Chornobyl NPP received permission to conduct «hot» ISF-2 tests

The State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate of Ukraine has issued a separate permit to SSE «Chornobyl NPP» for the commissioning of a nuclear installation of the Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility – «dry» type (ISF-2). Obtaining a permit will allow to start "hot" tests with real spent fuel, which will be transported from the "wet" type storage (ISF-1) to the new «dry» type storage (ISF-2).

During the period of electricity generation, from 1977 to 2000, the station accumulated more than 21 thousand fuel assemblies, which are now stored in the storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel –«wet» type ISF-1. The ISF-1 storage facility is not designed for long-term storage of fuel and its service life is limited, so all spent fuel assemblies must be moved to the newly built intermediate storage facility for spent nuclear fuel «dry» type ISF-2.

«Obtaining a separate permit for the commissioning of a nuclear installation of the «dry» type Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-2) is a successful example of coordinated and effective cooperation of relevant Ukrainian institutions, financial support of donors – European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Nuclear Safety Account and contractors who worked in difficult conditions associated with quarantine restrictions. Minister of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Roman Abramovskyi has repeatedly stressed the need to increase the level of safety of Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage. After all, safety is the most important aspect that must be observed during any activity. And the commissioning of the ISF-2 will allow safe storage of spent nuclear fuel at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant for the next 100 years», – said First Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine Bohdan Borukhovskyi.

According to SAUEZM Head Serhii Kalashnyk, obtaining the permit was preceded by many steps. In particular, the «cold» tests of ISF-2 with simulators of spent fuel assemblies were successfully conducted, the certificate of conformity of the completed construction of the object was received from the State Architectural Service of Ukraine, the programs of «hot» tests and the Safety Analysis Report were agreed. Serhii Kalashnyk also wished the Chornobyl NPP a successful «hot» test, which is scheduled to take place over the next 3 months.

In particular, the «hot» tests will consist in moving to the new storage 186 spent fuel assemblies, which after processing will be located in concrete storage modules.

Acting Director General of the Chornobyl NPP Volodymyr Pieskov, added that the staff of the Chornobyl Station had performed a large amount of work to obtain this permit. All employees who will be involved in the «hot» tests have been trained and are professionals.

«Chornobyl NPP will make every effort to successfully and safely conduct «hot» tests», – said Vladymyr Pieskov.
