DO YOU KNOW WHICH RULES OF SAFETY ARE AVAILABLE AND WHY DO YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THEM?!

One of the main tasks of the Agency is transparency and openness, therefore, the procedure for visiting the exclusion zone with familiarization visits was simplified in the resent years. Also, many visitors such as media representatives, academics, students, etc. come to the Zone for professional purposes. However, it does not mean that this area has become safer. Below, we will provide a list of safety rules in the exclusion zone to be followed in order to avoid the risk of exposure and misunderstandings with law enforcement or controlling authorities.

SAFETY RULES PROHIBIT:
1. PHOTOGRAPH OR RECORD SYSTEMS OF PHYSICAL PROTECTION.
The territory of the exclusion zone and the industrial complexes that are located there are restricted access facilities, therefore taking video and photo of the police stations, guard stations, control points and physical protection systems are strictly prohibited.
2. PHOTOGRAPH OR RECORD ENTERPRISES WITHOUT PREVIOUS AGREEMENT FROM THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE RELEVANT ENTERPRISE.
3. DRINK ALCOHOL.
The radiation levels in the zone have significantly decreased since the accident, but it still remains a polluted place where the most of buildings are in an emergency condition. Therefore, we urge you to remain in a sober, adequate state during your visit.
4. SMOKING ANYWHERE, BESIDES THE PERMITTED PLACES.
Smoking often causes fires in the exclusion zone, so please refrain from this addiction until you see the “Smoking area" sign.
5. TAKE AWAY THINGS FROM THE EXCLUSION ZONE.
A baby toy or old photo, which you may like so much thinking it would remind you of this trip, can be highly contaminated. In addition, we do emphasize that bringing "artifacts" from the Zone is not only dangerous, but also illegal! As a result, by this act you contribute to the distribution of radionuclides across the territory of Ukraine.
6. SEAT OR PUT YOUR PERSONAL THINGS ON THE GROUND (including arranging picnics and sleeping in tents).
Probably many of you have heard that all the cities and villages of the exclusion zone were washed off after the accident, in the direct sense of the word: with application of detergent, clearance, and then washing with water. The ground, on which this water drowned, absorbed all radionuclides. That is why the level of radiation near the earth is higher than at the height of your growth. In view of this, it is better to refrain from wishing to sit down to have a rest in the shade of the Pripyat trees.
7. EAT FOOD OR DRINK ANYTHING OF CHORNOBYL ORIGIN.
No matter how attractively and safely an apple looks at the closest fence, it's better not to risk to taste it. We have already noted above that there is a high concentration of radionuclides in the earth. So the vegetables and fruits that grow on this land are contaminated. So, please leave the Chornobyl apples for the local fauna.
8. EAT OR DRINK AT AN OPEN AIR, ON THE STREETS
When a strong wind blows, radionuclides rise along with the dust from the surface of the earth. If they stay on your skin or your pants, then it's easy to get rid of them: take a shower and wash your clothes. However, if they sit on your food and get inside the body together with a piece of sandwich, then it will be impossible to avoid internal contamination. The chances that you taste a radioactive dust, of course, are very small, but why should you endanger yourself once again? Inside a car or a dining room, your sandwich will be just as good to savor.
These security rules also REQUIRE:
1. WEAR DRESS CODE.
Regardless of weather, you should have indoor clothes and shoes. It is also desirable to have a headdress. The layer of clothing is your kind of body protection from alpha and beta rays.
2. STEERLING ONLY THAT ROUTES, WHICH ORDERED BY SUPPLEMENTARY PERSON.
The exclusion zone is contaminated unevenly - radionuclides form "spots" and sometimes at a distance of one meter radiation levels are differ several times. So listen carefully to all the instructions of the guides. These people know the Zone "along and across" and their main task is to protect you from the dangers of the zone.
3. MIND YOUR STEP AND DO NOT ENTER THE BUILDINGS.
There is a much greater danger in the Zone than radiation. This is an emergency condition of buildings, open-air hatches covered with leaves, broken glass, etc. So, do not be too distracted during the excursion, because you can accidentally get injured.
4. UNIFY THE CONTACT WITH WILD AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS.
If you see some kind of animal (such as the known fox named Semen or dogs near the ChNPP dining room), do not touch them, no matter how lovely they are. Animals do not have dosimeters, so they are safely walking over the dirtiest places in the Zone. They have on the wool a dust with a lot of radionuclides. Be careful and attentive to the wild animals.
5. WASH HANDS.
Personal hygiene is extremely important in the Zone. You touch somehow the leaves of trees, handrails, walls, and so on during the visit. With dirt, you can also get radioactive particles that you definitely do not want to eat with your dinner. Therefore, wash your hands thoroughly and do have wet wipes for any case.
6. TAKE AWAY THE GARBAGE
If you do not want to carry rubbish up to Ivankiv, then bring it to containers in the city of Chornobyl. In Pripyat, as in majority of the former settlements of the exclusion zone, there are no communal services.
We urge you not to disregard these rules, because they are based on a very important desire – to protect you. So, you should be responsible during the visit to the Zone, and then this trip will be absolutely safe and extremely interesting for you!
