European Union continues to support Ukraine in establishing geological repository for radioactive waste
Within the framework of the Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation program (INSC), the European Union supported Ukraine in developing the National Plan for the Geological Disposal of Medium-Level Waste and a timetable for its implementation. During the kick-off meeting held in Kyiv with the participation of representatives of the European Union, State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM) and State Specialized Enterprise «Central Enterprise for Radioactive Waste Management» (CERWM) the project implementation plan was presented and agreed by the project contractor.
«Ukrainian legislation provides for the creation of a geological repository for radioactive waste disposal. In order not to shift the burden of decision making to the next generations we are already taking the first steps to create it today. In particular, a storage operator has been identified and he has already developed a methodology for conducting comprehensive screening of the territory of Ukraine for the development of proposals for potential sites for the creation of the geological repository», - says the Head of State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Vitalii Petruk.
According to the head of the Chornobyl NPP decommissioning and radioactive waste management department, creating a deep geological repository of radioactive waste is a very complex program that will take decades to plan, prepare and implement. And a joint project between Ukraine and the EU is an important step towards achieving this ambitious goal.
«In order to develop a high-quality National Plan we need to study the concepts of disposal of medium-level waste used by other countries. Only taking into account the best international experience we can be sure that the Ukrainian repository will be reliable and secure», - emphasized Anastasia Nechytailo, Head of the International Cooperation Department of the Kyiv City Office SE «COTIS».
The project will be implemented within one year with the EU technical support. The project provides for an appropriate cost estimate and schedule for creation of a safe geological disposal of radioactive waste, as well as trainings for Ukrainian experts who will take care of the implementation of the project for the geological repository creation.
The project is implemented by a consortium of companies led by BGE TECHNOLOGY GmbH (Germany) in partnership with ANDRA (France) and SKB International AB (Sweden). Also, the consortium will involve Ukrainian experts from the Scientific and Engineering Center for Radio Hydroecological Landfill Research at the NAS of Ukraine to implement this project.
The recipient of the project is the State specialized enterprise «Central enterprise for radioactive waste management».
