IAEA and Ukrainian experts develop ways to select a site for geological repository of radioactive waste in Ukraine

The IAEA Expert Mission within the framework of the national project UKR9038, together with SAUEZM and dedicated enterprises of Ukraine, has developed recommendations for the site selection for the geological repository of radioactive waste (RW). In particular, international experts, together with Ukrainian experts, have reviewed the preliminary assessment of the geological conditions of potential sites for the repository in the Exclusion zone and prepared a draft of recommendations for Ukraine.

«Creation of a geological repository is necessary for Ukraine for safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Involving international experience in the process of creating the geological repository in Ukraine is a guarantee of its safety and use of state-of-the-art approaches and innovative technologies at the stage of the site selection», - Vitalii Petruk, the Head of the SAUEZM, emphasizes.

The experts also discussed the planning of further geological studies of crystalline rocks in order to select the site. These works should be the next step towards the creation of the geological repository in Ukraine.

During the mission, the experts visited the Vector complex, the Chornobyl NPP, and examined potential sites for the geological repository in the Exclusion zone.

The event was attended by representatives of the IAEA, SAUEZM, Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry, National Academy of Sciences, Public Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, Ukrainian State Corporation «Radon», SSE «Central Enterprise on Radioactive Waste Management», SSE «Ecocentre», SE «NNEGC «Energoatom».
