IAEA experts got acquainted with the process of implementation of ISF-2 and NSC projects
Vitalii Petruk, Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM), reported on the state of implementation of international projects at the Chornobyl NPP industrial site during a meeting of the Working Group on the application of the guarantees of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Ukraine, with the participation of experts from the IAEA, held at SNRIU. In particular, he familiarized the experts with the current state of construction of a New Safe Confinement (NSC) and the storage of spent nuclear fuel No. 2 (ISF-2).
According to Head of SAUEZM, today the work on the installation of the NSC foundations, Arch moving in the project position, concreting of peripheral walls and work on other auxiliary facilities has been completed. To ensure the dismantling of unstable structures of the Shelter Object, specialists have developed a draft technical task for the design of a corresponding working project of the launch complex, a list of equipment and an approximate volume of work. Now the NSC is in the stage of commissioning.
The construction of ISF-2 has been completed today. At the site, equipment testing of the object with simulators of spent fuel assemblies is underway. At the end of the year, we hope to switch to the «hot» tests, during which the first fuel assemblies from ISF-1 will be transported to the new storage facility.
«Every time we meet in Ukraine, we are discussing how to improve our cooperation, make it more effective. I think the current meeting will not be an exception, and we will find opportunities to increase the effectiveness of the introduction of guarantees in Ukraine. And we will do it as a single, coordinated team», – Haroldo Barozo Junior, the head of the operations unit «C» of department of guarantees of the IAEA, summed up.
Also, the delegation of the IAEA and the SNRIU visited the Chornobyl NPP, where they became acquainted with the actual state of implementation of the ISF-2 and NSC projects.
