In the Exclusion Zone, 60 radiation protection and emergency response specialists from Germany and Ukraine are developing radiation monitoring technology
In the exclusion zone, trainings on ionizing radiation measurement using specially equipped vehicles continue. The main task of the exercises is the development of radiation monitoring technology by mobile laboratories and portable measuring instruments in the event of a radiation accident at the NPP.
The training is carried out by experts of the SRI «Chornobyl Center for Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Radioecology» (SRI «Chornobyl Center») and the Federal Agency for Radiation Protection of Germany with the support of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The participants of the exercises are divided into teams that carry out radiological exploration on four prepared road routes within the Exclusion Zone and four hiking trails in the city of Prypiat. Specialists also select soil samples on specially equipped platforms and carry out comparative measurements of their activity. Joint work in the international teams will enable specialists to check the effectiveness of different measurement methods, reliability of equipment, improve professional skills, exchange experience with the achievement of international standards of measurement quality.
60 radiation protection and emergency response specialists from Germany and Ukraine participate in the training, in particular representatives of the Federal Agency for Radiation Protection of Germany, SRI «Chornobyl Center», State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, «Rivne NPP», «Emergency and Technical Center» of NNEGC «Energoatom» and SSE «Ecocentre». The first such trainings took place at the end of September 2016. They were attended by 46 specialists from Germany and Ukraine.
The technical arsenal of exercises consists of 18 equipped mobile research laboratories from Germany and Ukraine, as well as hexa-copter and helicopter MI-2.
The SRI «Chornobyl Center» as the organizer of the training provided for the development and preparation of routes, equipment for training sites, preliminary selection and analysis of soil samples, organized provision of participants with basic and additional means of personal protection, provided organizational, technical and medical support, reception and storage of equipment and support of teams during all stages of conducting exercises.
