In the Exclusion Zone over 1,000,000 trees were planted
During the spring forest-cultivation campaign, the employees of the SSE «Pivnichna Pushcha» planted 1,200,000 seedlings, which provided 94.5 hectares of reforestation. In addition, in a year, more than 200 hectares of forest were restored naturally.
«Reforestation in the Exclusion Zone is very important, because the forest is our natural barrier between densely contaminated territory around the ChNPP and adjacent lands. It prevents the release of radionuclides outside the Exclusion Zone», – Vitalii Petruk, Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, emphasizes.
Seedling landing takes place at the places of fire from past years and contributes to the restoration of biodiversity in these areas. For the forestation pine and oak are used, which are common in this region. All seedlings are grown by the workers of SSE «Pivnichna Pushcha» in seedbeds of the enterprise.
In the autumn, a campaign to plant trees on an area of 55.5 hectares, with another 450,000 seedlings, is planned. Contribution to the natural reforestation will be on 250 hectares.
