Office of the Chornobyl Reserve was opened in Kyiv
A representative office of the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve, which belongs to the management sphere of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, was opened in Kyiv.
«There are 23 reserves in Ukraine, but Chornobyl Reserve is unique because it was created on the spot of the largest radiation accident in the history of mankind. He may become a scientific center that will generalize all those diverse nature studies that are currently being conducted in the Exclusion Zone», – Oleh Nasvit, First Deputy Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, said.
As Taras Melnychuk, the Director of the Chornobyl Reserve, emphasized, the Reserve has already announced its strong scientific potential: this is evidenced by the number of scientific projects under which contracts and memorandums of cooperation were concluded, including with foreign partners. According to him, the Reserve receives international technical assistance and funds from European partners. For these funds, a project for the organization of the reserve area is under development and a project for the land management of its territory is planned.
Specialists also noted the timeliness of the creation of the Reserve in view of many factors.
«Scientists of the Reserve have already registered over 330 species of vertebrates and 1256 species of higher plants, among which 99 species are listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine», – Denys Vyshnevskyi, head of the ecology of the flora and fauna of the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve, said.
In addition, the speed and number of processes in the area are increasing. The state reopens this territory. In general, the Exclusion Zone is re-imagined as a new reality, as a region of rebirth.
