SAUEZM and the EBRD have discussed the implementation of international projects under quarantine

Today, during a video conference, the executive management of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, SSE «Chornobyl NPP» and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development discussed the implementation of international projects under quarantine.

«Despite all the challenges posed by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and the large-scale fires in the Exclusion Zone and across the country, implementation of international projects continues. In particular, preparations for «hot» tests at the spent nuclear fuel storage facility № 2 are in progress, during which the spent fuel assemblies will be transferred from the existing spent nuclear fuel storage facility №1 to the SSNF-2. Currently, work is underway to agree with the SNRIU the documents required to obtain a separate permit for the start of «hot» tests», - said the Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Sergii Kalashnyk.

The conditions of quarantine created certain force majeure circumstances, which affected the preparation for the «hot» tests of the facility. For example, some of Holtec company personnel, who are non-Ukrainian residents, have been evacuated to the United States, and during the «hot» tests contractor’s representatives should also be present at the site to confirm the facility's capabilities.

According to acting director general of the SSE «Chornobyl NPP» Volodymyr Peskov, equipment for the main SSNF-2 crane was delivered to Ukraine from France, which has already passed acceptance tests at the facility site. In addition, the systems and equipment of the Shelter object are operatively managed at the Chornobyl NPP industrial site in accordance with the requirements of the technological regulations.

Sergii Kalashnyk, the Head of SAUEZM, said that together with the EBRD, the Agency is currently developing a roadmap for Chornobyl. It will provide an opportunity to define common approaches and an action plan for future cooperation between Ukraine and the international community on the creation of an integrated radioactive waste management system in the context of decommissioning of the Chornobyl NPP and transformation of the Shelter object into an environmentally friendly system. In the future, an appropriate Fund with the involvement of the EBRD and the international community should be established for these projects.
