SAUEZM Head, Vitalii Petruk, reported on activities in 2017
On February 23, 2018, a public report of Vitalii Petruk, the Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management was held in front of representatives of the public, the Heads of the Exclusion Zone enterprises and the SAUEZM structural subdivisions. The results of the activities of the Agency and the enterprises belonging to the sphere of its management for 2017 were highlighted.
"Last year the Agency in general ensured implementation of tasks related to the implementation of state policy in the area of managing the exclusion zone and the zone of unconditional (mandatory) resettlement, overcoming the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster, decommissioning the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and transforming the Shelter Object into an ecologically safe system, as well as the implementation of state management in the field of radioactive waste management," - said Vitalii Petruk.
One of the main achievements of the Agency in 2017 was the restoration of the targeted use of funds from the State Fund for Radioactive Waste Management, which should ensure proper financing of the construction and maintenance of storage facilities for the storage of radioactive waste. The law, according to which the work of the Fund was restored, came into force on January 1, 2018.
In the framework of the decommissioning of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the transformation of the Shelter Object into an ecologically safe system, the construction of the fencing contour of the new safe confinement (NSC) was completed and a certificate of its readiness for commissioning was obtained. It should provide nuclear, radiation and overall safety of the NSC. The Head of SAUEZM noted the high professionalism of the specialists who performed the specified works, because they had to work in difficult radiative conditions in a short time. All design work was carried out without violations of the rules of radiation safety.
Another important result of SAUEZM work in 2017 was the successful protection of state investment projects developed by the Agency. All of them are successfully approved by the State Commission under the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine.
Outlining the tasks for 2018, Vitalii Petruk noted: "Safety is the main goal, which is directed at the activity of the enterprises of the sphere of SAUEZM management in the Exclusion Zone. Radiation control and monitoring, radioactive waste management, removal of ChNPP from operation, commissioning of the NSC and ISF-2, the maintenance of areas in a safe sanitary and fire condition, as well as the organization of security measures and improvement of infrastructure for visitors, remain the priority tasks for us, because their implementation reduces the risk of spread of radionuclides in the adjacent areas."
