SAUEZM presented priorities for activities in the Exclusion zone at parliamentary hearings
A.i. Head of SAUEZM Oleksandr Kovalchuk at the parliamentary hearings «Parliament's Environmental Policy Priorities for 5 Years» presented the strategy of development of the Exclusion zone and perspective directions of work. In particular, he drew the attention of the members of parliament of Ukraine to the legal conflict arising during the activity of the Chornobyl radiation and ecological biosphere reserve.
«Today it is the largest biosphere reserve in Ukraine, a reserve of the Polissya nature and at the same time a natural buffer between the most polluted area around the Chornobyl NPP and the rest of Ukraine. It should ensure the non-proliferation of radionuclides and, at the same time, the rehabilitation and regeneration of radioactively contaminated lands. In view of such uncharacteristic protected territories of the functions combination, the Agency has developed a bill on the features of functioning and establishment of the environmental regime of the Chornobyl Reserve, which should eliminate the contradictions in the legislation on its activity», - Oleksandr Kovalchuk noted in his speech.
He also emphasized that the safety factor remains a priority for any activity in the Exclusion zone. According to a.i. Head the radiation control and monitoring, guaranty of the safety of radioactive waste management and decommissioning of the Chornobyl NPP, keeping the territory in a fireproof condition reduces the risk of radionuclides spreading to the surrounding territories.
In his speech, the speaker paid special attention to the possibilities of further effective use of the Exclusion Zone lands. «The Agency is currently drafting a bill for the zoning of radioactively contaminated territory based on possible options for its further use. Its adoption will ensure that the criteria for zoning of contaminated territories are in line with the internationally recognized IAEA Safety Standards for the Protection of Humans and the Environment», - highlighted Oleksandr Kovalchuk.
Parliamentary hearings “Parliament's Environmental Policy Priorities for 5 years» were held in accordance with the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Resolution No. 103-IX of September 18, 2019. The event was attended by central executive bodies under the leadership of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, local executive authorities, local self-government bodies, specialists of scientific institutions and public organizations.
