Ukraine together with the European Commission is developing a national plan for geological disposal of radioactive waste
During the Start-up meeting on the project of the National High-Level Radioactive Waste Geological Storage (HLW) in Ukraine under the Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) the experts discussed current European experience in this field and outlined the objectives and tasks for the future.
«Creation of a geological storage for high-level radioactive waste is provided by Ukrainian legislation. Now this is the only economically justified and correct option for future generations, because the geological storage will provide reliable and long-term isolation of HLW from the release of radioactive substances into the biosphere. For us, the problem of burial of HLW is very urgent now, so the start of the national action plan development is a huge step forward», - said Oleg Nasvit, First Deputy Head of the State Agency of Ukraine for the Exclusion Zone Management.
The project should identify the process of selecting the site for the future storage, ensure the development of the plan and estimates, training of specialists, as well as support in shaping the positive attitude of the public towards this facility. It is designed for 2 years and will be implemented by a consortium of companies from France, Germany, Sweden, as well as with the participation of one of the enterprises of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The Beneficiary of the project is the SAUEZM, the State Specialized Enterprise «Central Enterprise for Radioactive Waste Management» (SSE «CERWM») will be the end-user.
