Ukrainian experts study international experience in creating geological repository and its safety assessment

Experts of SAUEZM, its enterprises and other specialized agencies and institutions of Ukraine became students of the IAEA training course on creating engineering barriers during construction of a geological repository for radioactive waste (RAW). The IAEA experts presented national experience of Great Britain, France, Sweden in this area, as well as outlined the theoretical basis for creation of a geological repository and its safety assessment.

«The need for a geological repository facility is defined by Ukrainian legislation. It is important for us that all objects of the radioactive waste management system are designed and built in accordance with world safety standards, that is why the Agency comprehensively engages international experts to work on such projects, including - in order to improve the skills of our experts», - says the deputy Head of SAUEZM Volodymyr Feshchenko.

According to the coordinator of the direction of international cooperation on creation of a geological repository, the Head of the International department of the SE «COTIS» Anastasia Nechytailo, the creation of a geological repository is a complex and long-term process. It requires a responsible approach to the creation on the basis of a national operator of a team that will work on issues of geological repository, as well as constant communication with other stakeholders and the public.

During the training course, the experts also considered the principles of designing geological storage facilities, the issue of containers selection, approaches to the location of radioactive waste in repository mines and ways to work with complex wastes, in particular, with graphite.
