Ukrainian experts took a training course held by the IAEA on creation of a RAW repository in deep geological formations

During the IAEA training course on the fundamentals for developing a Geological Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility in Ukraine, international and Ukrainian experts reviewed the world's experience in this area and the following steps within the framework of national project UKR9038. In addition to technical and security aspects, experts also focused on the issue of public involvement in such disposal projects.

«Today, in cooperation with the IAEA and the European Commission, we are working on the early concept of geological disposal in Ukraine, without which we will not be able to move on to practical steps. Much has already been done, but we continue to capture the experience of Western colleagues who have already successfully implemented similar projects. In particular, at this stage we are beginning to work with interested representatives of the public», – stressed Deputy Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion zone management Volodymyr Feshchenko.

During the training course the participants also got acquainted with the fundamentals of developing a national program for creation of a repository in deep geological formations, its terms, information on potential sites, structure of their research management and the volume of the research needed in the area that will allow the final determination of the site. Each topic was supplemented with information on international experience in this field.
