Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the second reading and, in general, the law «On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Improvement of the Legislation on Radioactive Waste Management». By this law the legislative framework of Ukraine in the field of radioactive waste management is brought into compliance with the international requirements of radioactive waste disposal.

«Priority is given to the long-term safety of storages and the efficient use of budgetary funds for the development of infrastructure for radioactive waste management. Thus, adopting an improved classification will allow to dispose of all Ukrainian radioactive waste 10 times cheaper. At the same time, the safety of the population and the environment will be ensured at the appropriate level in accordance with the international requirements for disposal of such waste», –emphasized the a.i. Head of SAUEZM Volodymyr Feshchenko. In particular, with the support of the European Union a set of recommendations has been developed, taking into account the real amount of RAW to be disposed of and the cost of such disposal. The experts proposed to modify the existing RAW classification according to which waste will be divided into classes according to their activity and acceptance criteria for disposal in 4 types of repositories: surface, near-surface, intermediate depths and in deep geological formations.
