Vitalii Petruk: “Cold” tests are a direct exit to “hot” tests and commissioning of SNFSF-2”

On August 1, 2017, the first stage of the complex testing of SNFSF-2 with the simulators of spent fuel assemblies (SFA) was started. The work is carried out in accordance with the Test Program, agreed with the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.

“Cold” tests are a direct exit to “hot” tests and commissioning of SNFSF-2. Commissioning of the new storage facility will increase the safety of storage of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The storage facility is designed for long-term storage for 100 years. Today storage of SNF is carried out in the storage facility of spent nuclear fuel of "wet" type (SNFSF-1), the term of operation of which ends in 2025”, - Vitalii Petruk, the head of SAUEZM, said.

According to the experts of SSE “Chornobyl NPP”, this important step was preceded by a long and complicated work on the implementation of construction, assembly and commissioning, individual (receiving) testing of equipment, complex testing of supplementary systems, as well as a complex testing of one of the most important system for the work of the object - the system of handling the transport container.

It is important to note that the beginning of complex tests of SNFSF-2 with simulators of SFA was started in accordance with the schedule of project implementation, which is a great merit of the personnel of contractors and SSE “Chornobyl NPP”.

We remind that the start of "hot" tests of SNFSF-2 with spent nuclear fuel is scheduled for December this year.
